My Journey – Janet Irwin

I didn’t start out in real estate.

My working life began in nursing. It taught me discipline, care, and how to deal with people from all walks of life. It grounded me and gave me a work ethic that has stayed with me throughout everything I’ve done.

But I always had a creative and entrepreneurial side.

In the 1980s, I explored that part of myself. I opened a small shop called Touch of Crafts, which reflected my love for handmade pieces and creativity. Around the same time, I was involved in Shatinas Party Fun. That was a completely different space—full of energy, people, and movement. It was vibrant, social, and full of life.

A very special part of that time was a dear long-term friend who created my very first logo and business card for Shatinas. She is still with me on this journey today, which means more than I can say.

Thank you, Siobhan—and Addicts.

Looking back now, I can see how those years shaped me. At the time, I was simply following what felt right, but each step was preparing me for what came next.

In 1993, I moved into real estate.

I didn’t realise then that it would become my life’s work. But very quickly, I understood that property brought together everything I had learned—working with people, building trust, and seeing opportunity.

I am proudly born, bred, and educated in Zambia, and that has always been at the centre of what I do. This is home.

Over time, the business grew into Homenet Zambia. And while it has expanded across many areas, at its heart it has always remained about people.

What has meant the most to me over the years are the relationships. Many of the people I have worked with have been part of that journey for decades.

It hasn’t always been easy. There have been challenges, and times where you have to adapt and rethink. But I have always believed in staying consistent, working hard, and keeping a clear sense of direction.

When I look back, I realise that nothing was wasted—nursing, crafts, events, all of it played a role in bringing me here.

And even now, I still feel the same drive I did when I started.
